Here is an example of the format for the INTRODUCTION of the Research Paper:
Topic: Gun Control
Thesis: There should not be any restrictions on Gun ownership
A. The Second Amendment
B. Deters Crime
C. Boosts economy
Then take your revised thesis and expand it to include support paragraphs
letting the reader know the general basis of your argument and what can expect
from the body of your paper.
Introduction:
There should not be any restrictions on gun ownership because the Second
Amendment explicitly forbids any restrictions on gun ownership, private
ownership of guns deters criminal activity, and the production and sale of guns
increases employment and boosts the national economy. As the Supreme Court has
held in case such as US v Miller (1939) and US v Warin (1976), the right of
private citizens to bear arms was not only the intent of the framers but was
explicitly stated as a fundamental part of the Bill of Rights. As recently as
2007, university studies--backed by FBI data--have proven that municipalities
with fewer restriction on gun ownership have far lower rates of violent crime.
Finally, arms manufacturing and sales is directly responsible for over 300,000
full-time jobs and accounts for over $3 billion in taxable revenue in the United
States alone. For these reasons, it is obvious that any form of gun control in
the United States is both unconstitutional and detrimental to society.
Your support sentences in your introduction will become the topic sentences
for your support paragraphs in the body of your essay. Make them CLEAR and
PROVABLE.
